Upper Dolpo region is Tibetan Buddhism, in 700 years at the forefront of Shey monastery.Dolpo area is protected by ‘Shey Phoksundo National Park’ of Nepal. It is situated in the mountain region of Western Nepal covering parts of Dolpo and Mugu Districts. It is established in 1984, it is the largest national park in the country with an area of 3555 Sq. km. Twice a year, the Pilgrims held a religious pilgrimage “bark” around Crystal Mountain – also known as the younger brother of Mount Kailash in Tibet. Upper Dolpo is also one of the few places in the world where pre-Buddhist shamanic religion Bon-po is still alive.

Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek is more like exploring the cultural heritages and settlements in combination with adventure.By 1996, foreigners were banned from traveling to the Upper Dolpo, which helped preserve the cultural uniqueness of the region.Even these days due to restricted immigration permit very few people have opportunities to experience this region. The region is a natural refuge wildlife: blue sheep, deer, Himalayan fox,eagles, vultures, the rarest big cats – Snow Leopard.

The Upper Dolpo Trek to Shey Gompa brings you into a mystical land where centuries old Buddhist and Bonpo traditions, interwoven with shamanistic influences, are still an important part of daily life. The villages, gompa’s and people you meet during this trek will leave an unforgettable impression on you.Trekking in Dolpo Region had permitted only after mid of 1989 by the government of Nepal.The trekking brings you to Shey Gompa, which is often referred to as the spiritual heart of Upper Dolpo. It’s a magical place, situated at the base of Crystal Mountain. Crystal Mountain is visited by hundreds of pilgrims each year, who make a kora (circuit) around the mountain, Dolpo’s own version of Mount Kailash.The region lies to the west of the Kali Gandaki Valley; Dolpo is situated within the Shey-Phoksundo National Park in the Eastern Part of Nepal.

This is quite a strenuous hike. You have to cross three high passes, Nagdalo La of 5350 m, the Shey La of 5000 m and Jeng La of 5110 m. These crossings involve long climbs and long descends. Besides, you stay above 4000 meters for a long time, with very cold nights.

Most treks into Dolpo take starts from 14 days to 30 days. but it can be shorter or longer, depending on the length of your walking days.The best time to trek here is towards the end of the monsoon season Sept to November. Lower Dolpo Trekking is full of ancient villages, adventurous passes, peaceful Himalayan lakes, hundreds of years old monasteries and smiling people. High mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif to the southeast surround this spiritual sanctuary. Dolpo region provides the opportunities to visit ancient villages, high passes, beautiful Lakes, isolated Buddhist monasteries and also to experience the vast array of wildlife inhabiting the region in Nepal.one of the deepest Himalayan Lakes, the Phokhsundo with beautiful turquoise blue water, watch the yak caravans that maintain the traditional salt trade with Tibet. The region lies further north from the Dhaulagiri Range in the rain shadow of the Himalayas – reflected in the colorful barren slopes of the mountains where the play of light and shadow is a perpetual fascinating spectacle. In summer, the caravans of yaks and sheep run through this valley on a trade route through the Himalayas and allows the exchange not onlygoods but also of ideas between the Tibetan Plateau and the valleys of Nepal.
